The politicians have refused to heed the will of the people for term limits they have voted to dramatically raise their own pay they have provided lavish million-dollar pensions for themselves and they have granted themselves numerous other privileges at the expense of the people. The career politicians dominating Congress have a conflict of interest that prevents Congress from being what the founders intended, the branch of government closest to the people. We hereby establish as the official position of the citizens and State of Nebraska that our elected officials should enact by constitutional amendment congressional term limits of three terms in the United States House of Representatives and of two terms in the United States Senate. The people, not Congress, should set term limits. A majority of both Republicans and Democrats in the 104th Congress voted against a constitutional amendment containing the term limits passed by a wide margin of Nebraska voters. Congress has a clear conflict of interest in proposing a term limits amendment to the United States Constitution. Nevertheless, Congress has ignored our desire for term limits not only by proposing excessively long terms for its own members but also by utterly refusing to pass an amendment for genuine congressional term limits. Voters have established term limits for over two thousand state legislators as well as over seventeen thousand local officials across the country. Governors in forty states are limited to two terms or less. The President of the United States is limited by the XXII Amendment to the United States Constitution to two terms in office. The people of the State of Nebraska want to amend the United States Constitution to establish term limits on Congress that will ensure representation in Congress by true citizen lawmakers. So your saying a Constitutional Convention. Why do you think they want to federalize the elections. ![]() Whether you think it’s flawed or not doesn’t matter, it’s here, it works and the whole point being was yes the Constitution does set out length of terms, it’s the States rights given by the Constitution to limit the number of terms served, which I believe stands at 15 states. It needs to be an all or none deal in congress. Or how about the speaker of the house? Anyone is eligible but they always pick a senior rep. Do you have a really great senator who'd make a good senate pro tempore (the guy who fills in for the VP when he's out of town)? He'll never get it because it's assigned by seniority. Yours will always be junior members on committees. Your people would be going against those from other states with much more seniority. It also puts them at a big disadvantage as many committee assignments are doled out by seniority. All a senator has to do is run for the house or vice versa. ![]() We have term limits. That word 'consecutive' kills your whole law. Senate from being listed on any official ballot for re-election? Terms currently being served would not be counted." Shall the Nebraska Constitution be amended to: (1) Set limits of two consecutive terms in office for Nebraska Legislators, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Auditor, Treasurer, Attorney General, public service commissioners, State Board of Education members, and University of Nebraska Board of Regents members (2) Limit the number of consecutive terms in office for certain local officials and (3) prohibit persons who have served three consecutive terms as a representative in congress or two consecutive terms in the U.S. Wrong, the states have the power not the feds. Congress will never even consider, let alone pass, anything that will limit them so a convention of the states is the only way to get it done. ![]() During FDR's reign, an amendment was passed limiting the president but not congress. Term limits will require a constitutional amendment because the terms are set by it.
